European stocks rally as bond markets hold steady after the Fed hike, while falling oil prices lift broader market sentiment.
European stocks opened firmly higher Thursday, extending the relief move that began in the previous session. The Eurostoxx gained 0.7%, Germany’s DAX climbed 0.8%, France’s CAC 40 added 0.5%, the UK’s FTSE rose 0.9%, Spain’s IBEX advanced 0.7%, and Italy’s FTSE MIB gained 0.7%, pointing to broad-based optimism across the region.
The primary driver behind the positive open centers on how the long end of the bond market absorbed the Federal Reserve’s latest decision. The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points to 3.75% to 4.00% and maintained a hawkish message, yet 10-year Treasury yields held around the 5% mark rather than breaking sharply higher. That stabilisation matters considerably, as one of the biggest risks heading into the Fed decision was that another hawkish policy signal would accelerate the global bond selloff. Instead, long-term yields held their ground, giving equities room to stage a relief bounce.
European Stocks Rally as Bond Markets Hold Steady
Declining oil prices further supported the improved market mood Thursday. Saudi Arabia offered additional crude cargoes through Oman, easing immediate fears over Middle East supply disruptions and taking some of the geopolitical risk premium out of energy markets. Brent crude fell nearly 2% to around $104 per barrel, while WTI dropped over 1% to trade back below $101.
The combination of steadier bond yields and lower oil prices proved particularly supportive for rate-sensitive and energy-sensitive sectors. Banks, industrials, and other cyclicals had already begun recovering during Wednesday’s session, while Siemens Energy, RWE, and Hochtief ranked among the stronger performers within the DAX.
US futures also pointed higher Thursday morning, adding to the constructive tone emerging from Europe. S&P 500 futures gained 0.8% and Nasdaq futures advanced 0.9%, suggesting Wall Street looks set to recover some ground after initially struggling with the Fed’s hawkish message following the rate decision.
Despite the encouraging signals, the current move carries the hallmarks of a relief rally rather than a definitive all-clear for risk assets. The Fed made clear that further tightening remains on the table, meaning another leg higher in Treasury yields could quickly test the durability of this rebound. Whether long-end yields continue to behave through to the end of the week now stands as the critical question for market participants navigating an still-uncertain policy environment.
