European Stocks Open Mixed as Risk Sentiment Wavers

European stocks open mixed as investors stay cautious after recent selling; French shares test key resistance near highs.

European stock markets opened on a mixed note Thursday, with investors displaying a more cautious stance following the selling pressure seen in the previous session. The overall risk mood remains tentative, reflecting uncertainty in broader market sentiment as traders weigh recent gains against lingering economic concerns.

At the open, the Eurostoxx 50 was up 0.1%, while Germany’s DAX slipped 0.1%. The France CAC 40 added 0.3%, the UK FTSE 100 rose 0.2%, and Italy’s FTSE MIB also gained 0.3%. In contrast, Spain’s IBEX 35 fell 0.3%, underperforming its regional peers.

French stocks continue to stand out, hovering near recent highs and attempting to clear a key resistance zone around the 8,253 to 8,259 level. A move above that range could mark a fresh bullish breakout for the CAC 40, which has shown relative strength compared to other major European indices in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Germany’s DAX remains more subdued after giving back a portion of its earlier advances from Monday. The index’s slight retreat suggests that investors are hesitant to extend positions amid persistent global uncertainties, including concerns over growth momentum and geopolitical developments that continue to shape sentiment across markets.

Elsewhere, the UK’s FTSE 100 saw modest gains, helped by a softer pound and strength in select energy and consumer stocks. However, gains remain limited as broader risk appetite stays contained.

Across the Atlantic, U.S. equity futures are little changed, with S&P 500 futures up 0.1%. That flat tone is contributing to a muted risk environment, as traders await further catalysts to guide direction into the latter part of the week.

Overall, the early trading session in Europe highlights a cautious atmosphere. Markets appear to be consolidating following recent volatility, with investors reluctant to make strong moves ahead of key economic data and corporate updates. The mixed performance across indices underscores the current balance between optimism over resilient earnings and caution amid uncertain global conditions.
