Hot CPI Data and Inflation Fears Rattle Markets

Hot CPI data and inflation fears rattle global markets as investors brace for Thursday’s PPI, retail sales, and jobless claims.

US stock futures declined Wednesday night as investors assessed the inflation outlook, upcoming economic data, and corporate earnings following a broad market selloff. S&P 500 futures fell 0.2% and Nasdaq-100 futures dropped 0.7%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures edged up 22 points, reflecting a mixed picture across the three major indices.

During Wednesday’s regular session, the Nasdaq Composite slid 1.9%, marking its steepest single-day decline since July 23. The S&P 500 lost 1.1%, its biggest one-day drop since July 29, while the Dow slipped just 0.1%, limiting its losses relative to its technology-heavy peers.

Hot CPI Data and Inflation Fears Rattle Markets

Asian markets bore the brunt of the risk-off move, with South Korea’s Kospi plunging more than 6%, dragged lower by technology heavyweights SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 5.13%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 1.13% and mainland China’s Shanghai Composite fell 1.98%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.11%, holding up relatively better than its regional peers.

The selling reflected growing investor concern that the Federal Reserve could pursue a more aggressive monetary policy stance before year-end, after September consumer prices rose faster than expected on an annual basis. Harris Financial Group managing partner Jamie Cox pointed to energy supply disruptions and geopolitical conflicts as key factors complicating the inflation outlook and keeping pressure on policymakers.

Bond Markets Reflect Persistent Inflation Anxiety

Bond markets continued to signal elevated inflation anxiety Thursday. US 10-year Treasury yields held at 5.094, near multi-decade highs, while UK gilts pushed to 5.431 and German bunds climbed to 3.467. The persistence of elevated yields reflects ongoing market conviction that central banks face a difficult path in bringing inflation under control without inflicting meaningful damage on economic growth.

Gold climbed 1.56% to $4,171.76, drawing safe-haven demand as risk sentiment deteriorated, while silver added 0.56% to $56.198. Brent crude eased 1.48% to $104.48 per barrel and WTI fell 0.98% to $94.17, offering modest relief on the energy front despite ongoing Middle East supply concerns.

Key Data and Earnings Ahead Thursday

Attention shifts Thursday to a packed slate of US economic releases. September producer price index data, retail sales figures, and weekly jobless claims all land at 8:30 AM ET, with Core CPI month-over-month expected to ease to 0.2% from the prior 0.3% reading. Core Retail Sales month-over-month is also due at 12:30 PM GMT, rounding out a data-heavy session that carries significant potential to shift rate expectations and broader market direction.

Earnings season adds another layer of market-moving potential. Regional lenders US Bancorp and PNC Financial Services, alongside Charles Schwab, all report results Thursday. Investors will parse these updates closely for further signals on economic resilience, credit conditions, and the broader health of the US financial sector heading into the final quarter of the year.
